Metaphor as a textual strategy in Chinese |

Abstract:
It is claimed that human language and conceptual system are fundamentally metaphorical in nature. Since metaphor is so pervasive and so important, can it have any textual function? This is a domain into which so far few academic adventures have been made, as nearly all the attention has been focused on metaphors in isolated sentences or utterances. The present author examined the textual function of metaphor in English (1999) and found that metaphor can be a powerful strategy in creation of texture in English in its own right. Does this conclusion apply to Chinese texts, which are different from those of English in so many ways? The present paper sets out to answer the question by a tentative exploration of how metaphor is exploited in creation of cohesion and coherence in Chinese texts. Based on a corpus of news items and a corpus of essays, the present paper, by integrating the model formulated by M. A. K. Halliday and R. Hasan (1976), system theory and interaction theory, demonstrates metaphor as an important textual strategy in Chinese in terms of mapping. The present paper is devoted to examination of metaphor in creation of texture at the macro level, that is, between the title and the text proper. This is the prelude to a series in metaphorical study. |
