摘要: 本文通过语料库文本分析与问卷调查相结合的方式,探讨了英语专业学生习得话语标记语well各种语用功能的情况,并与英语本族语使用者对该话语标记语的使用情况进行了对比。结果显示,尽管话语标记语well是英语本族语会话中最常出现的标记语之一,但我国英语学习者总体上来说明显地过少使用此话语标记语,他们仅能经常使用其“话语起始语”功能;定性分析显示,我国英语专业学生仅能较好理解其“延缓标记语”与“话语分割语”功能。双变量相关分析显示,英语本族语使用者对well各语用功能的使用频次没有显著影响到我国英语专业学生对此词的理解,并且后者对此词的理解状况也未显著影响到他们对其各功能的实际运用。

Chinese English majors' acquisition of the discourse marker well: An empirical study

Abstract: The present study examines how Chinese English majors acquire the 5 major pragmatic functions of the discourse marker well through a questionnaire-based measurement of their receptive knowledge together with a corpus analysis of their actual use of the discourse marker well. Results show that (1) unlike native English speakers who frequently employed the discourse marker well, Chinese university English majors utilized it significantly less often in speaking; (2) while native English speakers mainly used the delay marker function and the initiation marker function of well as a discourse marker, Chinese English majors were solely capable of using the initiation marker function; (3) Chinese English majors comprehended the delay marker function and the frame marker function satisfactorily; (4) but their understanding was not influenced by the frequency of the various functions of well, and also their use of well was not affected by their own understanding of the functions. Thus, it is suggested language teachers and textbook compilers should pay more attention to such discourse markers as well.
