How to classify different stylistic approaches is an issue that is much more complicated than it first appears. In view of recent critical debates, the present study offers a further discussion of the issue. The discussion focuses on the following questions: (1) whether one consistent criterion should be adopted in one classification; (2) how to distinguish linguistic stylistics and literary stylistics; (3) whether a classification should be carried out on two different levels. Through answering these questions and clearing up relevant confusions, we may gain a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the criteria concerned, and, more importantly, gain a clearer view both of the field in general and of some stylistic approaches in particular.
