英语名词词组中前置修饰语使用限制的次范畴化解释 |

摘要：
本文从次范畴化角度对英语名词词组中前置修饰语的功能和使用限制进行了研究。结果显示,前置修饰语对名词所指事物具有次范畴化功能,"前置修饰语+名词"结构是人们依据名词所指事物的特征对名词所指事物进行次范畴化的认知结果在语言中的反映;前置修饰语的次范畴化功能具有暗含对立次范畴和以恒久性属有特征为参照的认知特点,这些特点构成名词词组中前置修饰语的使用限制。本文根据这些特点,对英语名词词组中形容词和分词做前置修饰语的种种限制作出了解释。 |

A subcategorizational account of the constraints on the premodifier in English noun phrases |

Abstract:
This paper studies the function of and the constraints on the premodifier in the noun phrase of English from the perspective of subcategorization.The result of the study shows that the premodifier in the noun phrase plays the function of subcategorizing the THING referred to by the noun,and the construction"Premodifier+Noun"is the reflection in language of the result of cognition achieved when people subcategorize the THING in accord- ance with its attributes.The subcategorizational function of the premodifier suggests the existence of contrastive subcategories and takes as reference for subcategorization the coexisting intrinsic attribute of the THING. These two features constitute the constraints on the premodifier and determine whether a linguistic unit can function as a premodifier in the noun phrase. Based on theres features, the paper develops an account for the constraints on adjectives and participles as premodifiers in English noun phrases. |
